The Heavy Truck Towing Process
Understanding Our Safe and Professional Methods for Commercial Towing.
Step 1: Dispatch & Assessment
When you call, our dispatcher gathers crucial information: your location, vehicle type (semi-truck, box truck, etc.), and the nature of the issue. This allows us to send the right truck and equipment for your specific situation.
Step 2: Safe Arrival & Site Securement
Our operator arrives on the scene and first ensures the area is safe. This involves using safety lights, cones, and flares to alert other drivers, especially on busy highways like I-285.
Step 3: The Right Hook-Up (Under-Reach Towing)
For most tractor-trailers, we use an under-reach (or wheel-lift) system. This involves a large metal yoke that lifts the truck by its front axle, ensuring the cab and chassis are secure without putting pressure on the body or bumper. This is the industry standard for damage-free semi towing.
Step 4: Driveline & Axle Preparation
To prevent transmission damage during the tow, our operator will disconnect the driveline. For some vehicles, it may also be necessary to pull the axle shafts. This is a critical step in professional heavy truck towing.
Step 5: Secure & Transport
Once the vehicle is lifted and prepped, we double-check all connections, hook up air lines for the towed vehicle's brakes, and attach safety chains. We then transport your vehicle to the desired location, whether it's a repair shop or your own yard.
Step 6: Complex Recoveries (Winching & Rotators)
For accidents, rollovers, or vehicles stuck off-road, we use heavy-duty winches and potentially a rotator tow truck. A rotator acts as a mobile crane, capable of lifting and rotating a vehicle in tight spaces, making it essential for complex commercial vehicle recovery.
